The Arc of Weld County and the Sexual Assault Victims Association (SAVA) have come together to educate the Weld County Community about the sexual abuse of children and adults with developmental disabilities. Project Illumination is a program that educates the community about sexual abuse of people with developmental disabilities. The truth troupe of made up of actors and actresses with disabilities that perform for groups in an effort to explain the problem of sexual abuse. We also have a PowerPoint presentation that explains the issues in detail and resources that are available for prevention and intervention. Why are children with disabilities more at risk of being abused? One in three children with an identified disability for which they receive special education services are victims of some type of maltreatment (i.e., either neglect, physical abuse, or sexual abuse) whereas one in 10 nondisabled children experience abuse. Children with any type of disability are 3.44 times more likely to be a victim of some type of abuse compared to children without disabilities. (Sullivan & Knutson, 200). People with Intellectual Disabilities and Sexual Violence. Sexual abuse is similar to sexual assault, but is a pattern of sexually violent behavior that can range from inappropriate touching to rape.
